The thief in disguise
Social media in recent times has become a powerful tool in the lives of humans. Like any other device, it has its own advantages and disadvantages. The social media has become the largest medium through which the greater number of the world’s population communicate.
Today, social media such as Facebook, Twitter, Whatsapp, Linkedin, Instagram etc are now the fastest means through which messages are disseminated. Some people also hide behind these media to perpetuate fraud, raining insults on people and public misinformation.
Would this ever stop? Some active monitors of these media believe it will be a herculean task because the users disguise their identity. Interestingly, virtually everybody you meet on the streets is either chatting with friends via social media or an earphone heavily clipped to the ear. This has therefore become the cause of some accidents on our roads. Is it surprising? Some people even foresee some generations to come to have inscriptions like “SLOW DOWN! CHILDREN ARE WHATSAPPING” to be part of their road signs.
The academic performance of students has also dwindled in the past years and all accusing fingers are pointing to teachers, the students and especially the social media. Who is that social media? Is he really the cause of poor academic performance or it is our inability to utilize the social media effectively and efficiently?
At homes, these media is now an intruder. When parents are having conversations with their wards, the children rather chat with their friends on social media instead of listening to them. The enemy is really leaving amongst us because this is tearing apart the good parent-child relationship.  This social canker has gradually crawled into our our classrooms, lecture halls, churches and even when couples are making love.
In our lecture halls, while lectures are ongoing, students chat instead of listening to the lecturer. Is this not gross indiscipline? The biblical text which reads, “the thief cometh not except to steal, kill and destroy” is manifesting in the broad day light. In our various churches, some Christians, prefer chatting to listening of the living word. The social media, depending on how you use it, has now become a thief of good manners in our midst. It is causing our educational standards to fall, luring couples to shirk their responsibilities and also snatching the word from believers.
The social media is really a thief; let’s BEWARE!!!
